Cowal Way

A brief introduction to Cowal

Situated in the Southwest Corner of Scotland, Cowal is a very accessible yet little known part of Argyll. Despite its proximity to Glasgow, it is a quiet, peaceful area, with some spectacular scenery and fascinating history. Access by road via the A82 from Glasgow, the A83 over the Rest and be Thankful and the A815. Car Ferries run to Dunoon from Gourock and from Tarbert (Loch Fyne) to Portavadie. From these points, Glendaruel is a short 25-30 minute car journey.

Located north of the highland fault, Cowal is definitely Highland. The deep glens and narrow sea lochs are typical of the West Coast and there you can find a huge selection of Scottish wild life. Red deer, Roe deer, Buzzards and Golden Eagles to name but a few. The area is also full of history. Standing stones, burial cairns and rock carvings abound. The welcome you can expect is also a Highland one. Friendly folk who work hard and like to party, as you will see if you stay for the Ceilidh.

One of the area’s main industries is farming, with cattle and sheep the main products. So please remember to keep any dogs on a leash at all times.
