The Story of SteppsAcknowledgementsThe present book has been prepared as a co-operative venture, so that it could be published before the Local Government Reorganisation of April 1996, in the Strathkelvin District Libraries series of community histories. Most of the sections have been written by Freda Bunyan or Neil Kidd, with overall editorial control by Don Martin, but other individuals have made significant contributions, especially Miss Nan Boyle and the Rev. Fred C.Muir.Although this is the first history of Stepps to be published, the community is fortunate that several former residents thought it worthwhile, at different times, to write down their reminiscences of the early days of life in the village. These included Mrs Ann McNeil, Mrs Jean Wishart and Miss Janey Watson. The present authors have drawn heavily on their writings. Also invaluable have been materials gathered by the Strathkelvin Local Studies Project in 1986, for an exhibition in Stepps Library. At that time, too, the late William S.Duthie of Chryston contacted many former acquaintances from Stepps, for help with collecting materials; these are currently deposited in the William Patrick Library, Kirkintilloch, and again have proved most useful. Both in 1986 and 1995 a very considerable number of residents of Stepps, past and present, provided information about aspects of life in the community. The authors are grateful to all of them. They are too numerous to list in full, but exceptions should be made in the case of Mr & Mrs George Black, Mr Nelson Campbell, Mr Harry Corbett, Father Herbert Flack, Mr Douglas Keith, Mrs Elizabeth Kelly, Rev. Michael John Marsden, Mr Nathaniel Muir, Mrs Mary Robertson, Mr George Stewart and Mr Thomas Watt. Thanks are also due to the staff of Boys' Brigade Headquarters, Glasgow and Carronvale. The reference staff of the William Patrick Library, Kirkintilloch, have been most helpful, as has Brian Skillen of the Mitchell Library, Glasgow. The authors would also like to pay tribute to their respective spouses, Jim Bunyan and Beatrice Kidd. This web edition includes additional photographs from published sources. The web editor acknowledges these other sources with thanks. |
