The Story of Stepps
Sports & Recreations Cricket Club
The date of formation of the Cricket Club at Stepps has not been established, but there is some evidence that it was on-going in the early 1900s. The playing pitch was alongside the road at Mount Harriet. In January 1917 it was reported to Cadder Parish Council that although the field was still entered on the valuation roll, with rental of £4 and rates of 4s 8d, neither had been paid for some time. It emerged that war service had rendered the club defunct, but Col. Sprot was allowing boys to use the field without payment of rent. The club was reconstituted after the war, and in 1921 repairs and an extension to the pitch took place. In that year the fixture list included matches with teams from the Lanarkshire and Western leagues.
