The Story of Stepps
Community Organisations Floral Art Club
The initiative for a Floral Art Club began with pupils attending evening classes on the subject at Chryston High School during the Winter Session 1968-69, under the tuition of Mrs Rosina Davidson. Tentative meetings were held in the houses of interested parties, and on 4th February 1969 it was decided to form the "Bothlyn Floral Art Club". The elected officials were: Founder-Chairman Mrs R.Davidson; Vice-Chairman Mrs C.Lothian; Secretary Mrs I.Cochrane; Treasurer Mrs M.Mair; Committee members Mrs T.Finch, Mrs A.Kirk, Mrs M.McCallum, Mrs McLaren, Mrs E.Reid, Mrs J.Stirling, Mrs H.Turnbull and Mrs I.Wither. A membership fee of £1 2s 6d was agreed, together with a set of rules. A well-attended Inaugural Meeting was held in the Public Hall on 17th February 1969. A representative of the Scottish Association of Flower Arrangement Societies was present to explain the objects of that body. Proceedings also included a demonstration of flower arranging by Mrs Jean Attwood. The following year the title of the club was changed to the "Stepps & District Floral Art Club". Mrs Davidson was made an "Honorary President" in appreciation of her work in forming the club. In 1978 she donated a trophy to the club, to be competed for by members, in an annual competition.
In addition to monthly evening meetings in the Garfield Hotel, the Club has been involved in the organisation of Flower Festivals in different local churches. The first of these was in 1971, in the former St Andrew's Church, Blenheim Avenue. Others followed in Chryston Parish Church, in 1978 and 1990, and in Stepps Parish Church, in 1986. In 1982 the club won the "Claude Allen Trophy" in the Floral Art Section of the Scottish National Sweet Pea, Rose & Carnation Society Show.
