The Story of Stepps

Sports & Recreations
Pony Trotting

The track for this sport was laid out by Mr Ralph Marshall about 1940. It was situated behind the Council flats at Steppshill, on what had formerly been part of Frankfield Loch. During the war years, to consolidate the marshy ground, ashes were brought from Provan Gas Works. At this period pony trotting events were held there in aid of the Red Cross. Towards the end of hostilities, "Marshall Park", as it was known, was sold to motor-dealer Allan Gray of Braidwood, near Carluke, who improved the site by erecting a grandstand made of surplus war materials, and gave it the somewhat grandiose title of "Stepps Stadium". He brought over Swedish ponies for the meetings, but eventually the pony-trotting venture failed. For a short time afterwards stock-car racing took place on the track, but this also was unsuccessful and the Stadium closed.
