The Story of Stepps

Sports & Recreations
St Joseph's Tennis Club

This club was formed in 1927, when two courts were laid out in the field opposite St Joseph's Church. This work was carried out voluntarily, by parishioners, under the direction of a Mr Besant, who was Manager of Glasgow Parks Department at that time. From 1928 dressing accommodation was available in the new Parochial Hall. It had steps leading down from a rear balcony directly on to the courts. The fee for club membership was £1 for adults, per term, and 12s 6d for juniors. Individual games cost 4d for 40 minutes play. After two terms the club joined the Catholic Tennis League and games were played on a "home-and-away" basis. After each match the visiting team would be entertained to tea, followed by a dance. With the advent of war in 1939 the hall was commandeered by the army. With no dressing accommodation the courts fell into disrepair and the club ceased to function.
